Anyone else notice many more newbies suddenly???
by Tatiana inis it just me, or has everyone noticed many more lurkers and newbies posting now?
i have been reading way too much lately, in light of the nbc broadcast, and it seems as if each time i read a new thread, there's someone posting their first post, or third.
right offhand, i remember leaving-jws, rmcgill_leader, jwdonotcall, confused and lost, xfdwg97, and another post i just read from mom--something or other.

I'm new. I signed up this month instead of last month because I just found the place. And also, frankly, because technical problems have made it impossible for me to post at a (non-JW-related) forum where I used to quite active. There's only so much time in a day for reading and posting.
There are several things I like about this site. There seems to be little demonizing of, and broad generalizations about, individual JWs. The posts are written in English, not leetspeak. It offers some inside info on doctrinal changes that I can't get from my mom.

Imagine the money they can make by selling off their remaining Brooklyn real estate. That property must be worth a fortune.

WILL YOU kindly help me?
by Terry ini've finished writing my novel (50 thousand words) about my years spent in federal correctional prison when i was an obedient little jw.. the editing and rewriting stage now commences.. i need your help!.
here is how you can help me.. i can't know what an outside mind wants to find out concerning this experience.
i can only conjure up what seems interesting to me.. tell me what you want to know about such a personal experience.. that will give me a checklist to compare to what i've written already.. i may have missed many little details which are very important to a reader.. i may have neglected essential questions which must be answered in order to satisfy the mind.. please offer me your curiousity.. thanking you in advance; i appreciate your taking the time to advance my novel to the finish line.. (i wrote it as a fictional work because i could not honestly write about myself without the distance of this device.. so, i made myself into a character with a different name.. the identity of everyone else is non-fiction.

I was part of a congregation in the late '60's in which there were two young brothers sentenced to work in hospitals in lieu of prison. It was considered a "compromise" to accept alternative service, so some savvy judges actually made alternative service the sentence - a real win-win.
The same thing happened with a couple of my oldest brother's friends, around the same time. According to Terry's account, his BOE specifically told him not to accept alternative service. I don't know if there was a doctrinal shift sometime during the war, or if this was another case of BOE-to-BOE variation.

Good Cop/Bad Cop
It just dawned on me, that you would have had to go to war. With so many young men dying in this war, your chances of coming back in a body bag, was great. So in essence, the JW's saved your life. Please comment, and try not to be too loud.
They could have saved his life without his going to prison, though. The time he spent in prison he could have spent working an alternative service job and living "outside," in (relative) freedom.

Terry, what year were you drafted? My oldest brother had friends who were drafted in the late 1960s and who did accept alternative service assignments at hospitals. It's not my recollection that they were sanctioned by the JWs for doing so. Was there a doctrinal shift at some point during the war, or was my childhood congregation more forgiving?
My brother, BTW, was 4F for being overweight. They actually sent him to a psychologist to talk about why he didn't want to lose weight. "Um, because if I do, you'll draft me?" Duh.

Your last post answered one of my questions -- what contact/support did you receive from the congregation while you were imprisoned? It was of interest to me because a good friend of my family made it a practice to write to incarcerated JW conscientious objectors during the Vietnam War. I had hoped she was one of many.
I'd also be interested in learning about your relationships with other prisoners, their initial reactions to you, if and how those reactions changed over time, etc. Ditto re: your relationship with the facility staff and administration.
Did you have a cell/roommate? Was it another JW? Were JWs grouped together in general or dispersed throughout the population?

You say you're saving up for a trip -- do you have a destination in mind? If so, you could get her a book about that destination. It could be a travel guide, or a book of scenic photos, or a history of the area, or even a novel set there, depending on what your wife likes to read. If she's not a big reader, maybe you could find a DVD instead.

Pioneer Sister tells my Wife If your Raped just pray to Jehovah for help??
by Witness 007 inwhile being new in the truth my wife dicussed the rape issue with her pioneer {my mums annionted} teacher.
her response was to say if your raped you need to pray to jehovah for help and just yell for him to stop so it's not considered fornication.
i was shocked at this so i found her an awake article about a sister who was assulted by a tradesmen in her home.

No second thoughts, then or since, although my mom still hopes. I had been planning to leave for years (I was raised JW).
Re: people who leave mentally, but continue attending meetings, I suspect that may be what one of my brothers is doing. Mom raised four kids JW (dad was not JW); two of us have left. One of the remaining two I suspect may be staying for mom's sake.
